Move Over News Programs, Here Comes The Noose!

First off, hi guys! Jaiden here!

I noticed that some of the cast members from The Noose visited TP at TPRawks. Awesome!

However, that's not the last we'll see of The Noose with TP.

Look at this:

According to two Temasek Polytechnic's most updated & reliable news sources (Other than Gossip J here of course. Hah!) some of our MNS students are working on an iPhone app that features everyone's favourite program, The Noose! I'm pretty sure most of us have heard about this amazingly funny, satirical, caustic & incredibly awesome laugh-inducing program! Here's a clip to prove this!

Of course, this is basically a caricature of how Singaporean culture is like, providing an interesting exaggerated view of how Singaporean culture is like, ultimately providing both entertainment & education (Read between the lines please, & don't take things too seriously.). Nice amalgamation, I feel.

I'll update more on this interesting topic when I get some ~~noose~~, I mean news from TP's Open House! Stay posted on this space for more information about this exciting project!

As y'all might've known, in the previous months, TP held its annual Director's Cup! It has come to my attention that MNS had actually sent in a team to compete in the basketball component & our team actually came in second place! Congratulations & well done!

HELLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PEOPLE!

Today was the first day of TPRawks, & what could I say about it...

IT ROCKED! Everyone practically tore the house down with your enthusiasm & attentiveness, & I thank you all for that! This first day wouldn't have been a success without you all! Let's make the rest of the days equally fun as today, okay? Pretty please?

Anyway, without further ado, here's some pictures to showcase how fun the event was! (Yours truly was the photographer today so I can relate offhand to just how fun it was! Had a lot of fun today!)


Here's the team that helped out today! As usual, most of us SIG members are present. (I wonder what the school would do without us. ahem) Anyway! Today, we had our VP, Joseph, Event Head Hong Yi, sub-comm members Kian Kiang & Ce Zhong. We even had two freshies & another schoolmate (Kasper) help out!

Ping Yi Secondary School Carnival

Hey guys!

The diploma of Mobile & Network Services participated in the Ping Yi Secondary School Carnival on 29 Oct 2011 (Sat). We displayed our iPhone Apps that were released to the industry on iPads to the students of Ping Yi Secondary School during the carnival, & attracted a crowd of interested students enquiring about the iPhone Apps development courses.

From the huge response garnered, it is highly obvious that the iPhone industry is indeed a booming one.

With the advances made by the industry nowadays, it honestly is hard to keep up with all the changes, or even to properly spot the proverbial diamond in the rough, in order for them to be polished. Hey y'all! Jaiden here again! Recently, TP organised the KNCT Exchange Program, which brought in students from the Kumamoto National College to TP, in which many MNS students volunteered for!

When you hear the words 'Exchange Program', a few things come to mind. Good memories, lots of fun &... NEW FRIENDS! That's awesome right?

Good to know that the students were exposed to some of our culture as well. This is what an exchange program is about, transference & exchange of cultures! thumbs up

TP Mobile App.. REVAMPED!

Hey y'all!

Guess what? The TP Mobile App's latest update now allows us to check our timetables on it! Now, that's a really neat feature to have, now we don't have to be searching through our huge bags for a tiny piece of printed paper that tells us where to go!

Personally, being a student of TP, I feel that having a mobile app for school services can be really handy, especially since I am iPhone/iPad user. This way, sometimes, when there are modules which I know I don't really have to bring my MacBook for, I can just pack the iPad to school or basically just access everything on my phone without even having to bring my 2.7kg MacBook, which can really hurt my shoulder, especially if I'm rushing around for classes!

Apologies for no pictures, my digicam is acting up - Its old & cranky. Anyone want to get me a new one? - so I promise I would have a new post about it that's slightly more fun than just words, words, words & more words!

National Day Rally 2011 Public Forum was held on Tuesday 16-August evening at The Grassroots' Club, which was organised by REACH and chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean and REACH Chairman Amy Khor.

Our SIG President, Sam Ong, was very privileged to be selected as among the 200 people who were invited to attend, including representatives from grassroots organisations, unions, business communities and schools.

ANNUAL SURVEY ON INFOCOMM MANPOWER FOR 2010

Great News for our MNS graduates and students!!!

In the latest manpower survey conducted by IDA (Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore) and published in April 2011, our MNS graduates should be in high demand in the job market, based on the following survey findings:

* Our MNS graduates would fit well into 99% of all segments in the industry (37% in IT Services, 25% in Software, 20% in Hardware and 16% in Telecommunication Services).

* Our MNS graduates in ITSM option would fit well into the top job category of "Operations & Support" with 28,500 manpower jobs employed in 2010.

* Our MNS graduates in Mobile Solutions option would fit well into the top 3 and 4 job categories of Application Engineering and Software Design & Development (excluding games), with a combined 24,600 manpower jobs employed in 2010.

Programme / Synopsis:
What are the benefits of using a learning enterprise to teach ITSM methodologies? How much more will staff and student learn from using this technique of the enterprise as compared to the traditional teaching strategies? This session aims to share practical real life best practices on using the concept of a learning enterprise to impart ITSM methodologies.

Speaker Biography:
Benny Chin has been with Temasek Polytechnic since year 2000. He is currently the Course Manager for the Diploma in Mobile & Network Services, Course Manager for the Diploma in Mobile & Wireless Computing and the Manger overseeing the IT Service Delivery & Operations Support of the school. Portfolios and projects under his charge are the School's APVC member, ITSM Centre Project and the Avaya Unified Communication Centre of Excellency Project.
Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic, Benny had been a Manager in the Supplier Quality Department in Western Digital Singapore.

IBM Pulse of Asia Summit 2011

Hello Internet enthusiasts!

On the 20 July 2011, the School of Informatics & IT held an event for IBM Pulse of Asia Summit 2011. In this event, our own SIG students, along with lecturers, attended to 70 Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and VIP guests. Many of these guests are from abroad (Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and India).

These guests were brought around the IIT school to tour the following centres of excellence:

TP-IBM IT Service Management Centre

TP-IBM Centre for IT Security

TP-Thomson Reuters Financial Risk Management Centre

TP Green Data Centre

Our photographers, Wai Kit and Gerald did a fantastic job in capturing the moments of the day.

Of course, the guests have to have their lunch and tea before touring around the IIT school.

After the refreshments, the guests was was shown a presentation on the Student Internship Programme (SIP) and Overseas Student Internship Programme (OSIP).

The delegates were introduced to the TP-IBM IT Service Management Centre, first setup in Asia where the Service Desk and first level IT support were managed entirely by students, providing IT services to real life customers that included staff and students in the School of IIT.

Overall, it was a successful event-filled day, thanks to the amazing lecturers and the helpful seniors who are having their SIP in the TP-IBM IT Service Management Centre.

And of course, thanks to the smart, wonderful SIG members who helped out on that day. As you can see, I was the only girl helping yet I rocked the event out. Actually, all ten of us had fun working together and will be looking forward to more events such as this.

On the last note, it's never too late to join us in SIG. We'll have lots of fun making new friends and working together!

Hey all!

My persistence has triumphed! I have finally got the course manager Mr. Benny Chin who has been very busy to have an interview! Aren't I awesome? *no points for self-praise*

So, without further ado, here is the interview:

Interview Questions (Course Update)

1. How do you think MNS as a whole has been faring for the first half of this academic year?
MNS has been doing very well. For the Mobile Solution option, there has been many queries from the public on Mobile Apps development (especially on iPhone Apps). The Diploma has been engaged by many companies to help develop iPhone Apps such as:
· Civil Service College (CSC)
· National Climate Change Society (NCCS)
· MINDS
· Sentosa Leisure Group
· TP Library
· TP Corporate Communications department

All the Apps mentioned above should be ready for deployment in October 2011.

For the IT Service Management (ITSM) Option, many Industries have visited the Centre and have expressed interest in taking our students for internships and permanent employment.

2. With the recent developments at Apple, how do you think the Lion OS X & iOS 5 will be able to impact the development of the MNS course structure? Will the course eventually be more Mac-based?

The course structure of the Mobile Solution option will be based on the industry trend, School Advisory Committee (SAC) and our internal IIT Scanning Committee’s inputs. The Diploma will focus on the top two most popular Mobile platforms in the curriculum. Currently, we are teaching our students to develop iPhone and Android Apps.

3. Since everyone is probably putting their efforts into their final assignments for the semester & revising for their final exams, how would you advise students to maintain their good grades, or pull up their grades at this crucial point of time?

Believe in yourself and put in your best effort to achieve your best cGPA. You are in the right Diploma that is highly sought after by the Industry.

4. What direction is MNS moving towards?

MNS is preparing students for two things: Employment after graduation and further education.

Employment after graduation – we have many strong industry partners such as Avaya, Cisco and IBM. They are aware of our students’ capabilities and have been taking our students as Interns. Students can seek employment with them after graduation. According to the IDA InfoComm Manpower report 2010, the top most sort after IT job is Operations and Support (ITSM) which is what the Diploma’s strength. Also, in the IDA report, it was mentioned that there were shortage of Mobile Apps developers.

For further Education – the Diploma has secured more than 35 Universities (both Local and overseas) that will give advanced standings to MNS graduates. The advance standing ranges from half year to 2 years.

5. How much do you think MNS has improved in your time as a course manager?
· The curriculum is relevant
· Job employment demand is high for the Diploma
· MNS graduates command the highest starting pay compared to other diplomas
· Students portfolio has improved greatly with many iPhone Apps in the Apps store, many more industry projects done by students, many students attachment to big companies such as IBM, Live ITSM Centre in IIT

6. Conclusively, sum up what do you think are the best features of MNS.
Same as number 5.

Parents Seminar

Hey all!

Its Jaiden! I do apologise for the lack of updates here, I've been away for the entire term break & it took me quite a while to get my TP-bearings back! Absence does make the heart grow fonder, but it also makes the mind more rusty, unfortunately. No worries though, I'm back & making this blog a really active one again!

On the second of July, we held a Parents Seminar for the parents of potential freshies to understand TP better & make them feel at home! Basically, it is a TP-wide event where parents - & potential students of TP! - come down to TP & learn all about the courses that their children may be interested in!

Of course, MNS never loses out on the action. Here are some pictures to prove it!

Even our course manager, Mr. Benny Chin was there to assist the SIG in explaining about our wonderful course to interested parents! Isn't that just fabulous?

Freshmen Day!

Whoo! Yesterday - Okay, about one hour ago. - was our annual MNS Freshman Day that the MNS SIG organises to ingratiate the freshman with their seniors & of course, with their own classmates.

Technically, we just organise games for everyone to participate in to know each other better, & at the end of all the games, we get refreshments. FREE FOOD FOR EVERYBODY! Now, that's just one of the many incentives to stay back right?

Its a surprise, one never knows when Freshman Day is on until the day itself, unless you're part of the organising commitee - That's us SIG members! - or if you're helping out. So, please don't blame us if we're keeping you a little bit, we're just trying to give you guys a memorable & fun experience in TP! We spent a lot of effort planning games & buying food just to officially welcome you guys to polytechnic life & hopefully allow you to make new friends, & of course have fun!

CCN Day!

Hey guys! I apologise for the lack of updates, I've been rather busy the previous week finishing my assignments & all, but I'm back with a rather interesting post! Last Friday, the 20th of May was CCN Day! I was there personally at the event & I must say, the freshies this year are doing quite a good job at manning their stalls & earning money for charity!

Anyway, in case you guys forgot, let me reiterate the meaning of CCN(Campus Care Network) Day. CCN Day is a trademark event of the TP Campus Care Network, in which students & staff set up stalls to raise funds for the needy students at TP. This event does not just help to raise funds, but it also helps to ingratiate the entire polytechnic together as friends are made, a care group cooperates with each other to set up & man a stall, & basically the entire school works hand-in-hand to raise funds, forming new bonds between people, & strengthening already existing bonds between people. What a meaningful day, isn't it?

Anyway, since this event involves the whole school, of course our MNS freshies will be involved too! Here's a picture!

These are freshies from our course of Mobile & Network Services, from the care group C298! They had a very interesting stall selling Polaroid pictures for 1.50SGD each, & I believe they had drinks & snacks on sale too. See, it's freshies like this that put the 'fresh' into the word 'Freshman', they bring new life to the world & decorate the world with their marvellous entrepreneurship skills! Brilliant work guys!

Well, being the very persistent 'reporter' that I am, how could I have not interviewed anybody? *laughs* Here's an interview of the vice-chairperson of C298, Muhammad Noorhakim bin Mohamed Shukor:

1. How did you feel in having your first CCN Day experience?

I feel honoured to have been part of this CCN day as it is part of TP culture and also my first.

2. Will you want to help out at CCN Day again next semester?

If I can find the time, then I would gladly help out in the next semester.

3. What do you think CCN Day is about?

I think that CCN day is about raising funds for students who need financial assistance.

4. Do you feel that CCN Day was a meaningful experience for you?

It was certainly a meaningful experience as I came to know that there are students who are willing to support this event by purchasing other care groups' product or taking part in simple games at different stalls.

5. What have you learnt from CCN Day?

I have learnt to work closer with my classmates, how hard it actually is to earn money and different methods to sell our items.

6. Last but not least, how did you & your class prepare for CCN Day?

We prepared by giving different suggestions on what to have on the CCN day and discussing different products to sell. We also prepared by collecting money from our classmates as a capital to purchase the items, allocating jobs to classmates and telling ourselves to try as hard as possible to raise funds.

Basically, this interview documents the process of how is CCN Day like in general, & how can one prepare for it. Also, I felt that the way C298 prepared for their CCN Day debut was a wise choice. Brainstorming is usually key to a good project, almost like the keystone of a bridge. Remember, without a good foundation, one can never build a good building. Or do well in your modules for that matter. Everyone, please study hard!

Alright then, enough of talk, I'll leave you guys with this post. Hopefully it was informative & it helped you guys understand a little bit more about CCN Day!

Valued Feedback from the Lecturers!

What could be even more informative than student interviews? Interviewing the lecturers! Lecturers know all the facts, & they are a good source of information, & when you need facts, who do you turn to? Lecturers! It's a good thing our TP lecturers are very friendly, they are always there for us when we need help, & they always like to share their life experiences with us, providing us with not just academic information, but life lessons, overall giving students a holistic education. This is one of the reasons why you should join TP!

Alright, without further ado, let me introduce the lecturer I have interviewed for this post, & she is none other than our course coordinator, Ms. Ho Li Chin.

Here is her response to my questions:

1. What will you advise a student to do if he/she wants to do well enough so that they can be on the Director’s List?

Well, one of the important tips I can advise is to study hard and to cultivate a good time management skill! I notice one of the biggest challenges or “weakness” among students is their time management skill. Because of various types of “distractions” amongst them nowadays, most students have rather poor time management. This results them in skipping lessons, hand-in last minute assignments, and so on…

2. As a lecturer, what qualities do you believe that a student on the Director’s List should possess?

I believe one basic quality will be a good character. A good character is the cornerstone for enduring a personal success. Also one needs to always have “what is my end purpose” in mind. This will motivates him/ her to work hard to achieve the “end objective”.

3. What are the benefits of being on the Director’s List?

It will definitely help to enhance the student’s portfolio for his /her future job application or undergraduate study application. If the student continues to maintain in the Director’s list during the course of study, it would be likely that the student will be one of the Diploma Medallist recipients, because he / she has maintained an excellent academic performance throughout the course.

4. Since not every student can be on the Director’s List, what is your opinion on the difference between a student that is on the Director’s List & a student that is not on the Director’s List? Should one be overly worried that they are not on the list?

A student should not feel discouraged if they are not on the list. The Director’s List is awarded as recognition to those performing very well in their academics & have excellent academic grades from the diploma.

As I said earlier, good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. A student with good character will help him/her to excel in other aspect too for example in CCA, or to reach out to help others etc.

5. Does being on the Director’s List improve one’s chances in getting to university? If so, how much is the probability of getting into university amplified?

Being on the Director’s list implies that a student has been consistently performing very well in his/her academic achievements. For local universities, academic results usually play one of the important criteria to earn the admission to the undergraduate study. So, it is still back to the good academic performance that improves your chance of admission to the University.

6. Lastly, do you feel that being on the Director’s List gives students an advantage over other students in terms of opportunities to be on school commitees, going for competitions & other similar activities/events?

Not really. But we always believe everyone can be maximising to his / her fullest capacity, be it in academic results or other CCA/leadership. The school has various student development programmes in place for student to grow to their capacity and all-rounded if possible. For those with good academic achiever, we feel they are capable to cope and juggle very well in both study and competitions / CCAs.

Now, wasn't that very informative for all of us? Now I don't feel so bad about not doing so well, & of course, I'm spurred on to pull up my socks to get to a university, which is by the way, one of my goals. Wish me luck! It's not over for me yet! I still have the time to walk the walk, & not just talk the talk!

Hey y'all! Jaiden here again! I have here interviews from some of our diploma students that are on the Director's List! I hope these interviews prove informative.

First up is Sam, our TP-Avaya scholar & MNS SIG president! Here's a picture of him!

Doesn't he look so very sunny, friendly & not the skinny homebody scholar everybody assumes scholars are?

Here's his response to my questions:

1. How do you feel about doing well enough to be on the Director’s List?

Even though I managed to do well enough to be on the Director’s List, I feel that I can do much better than what I have done and there is a lot of room for improvement. I will continue to work hard this year to secure my place on the list next year. Overall it was a pleasant surprise!

2. Were you surprised at being in the Director’s List?

Actually I was quite surprised, as I thought I didn’t do well enough to be on the list.

3. Was getting to be on the Director’s List one of your main goals after getting into your current diploma that you are partaking?

Yes it’s one of my goals, but my main goal is to secure a scholarship and win some awards for the school and our course.

4. If you know any freshmen that wants to be on the Director’s List, how would you advise them to get on the Director’s List?

Don’t just study hard, study smart.

5. What inspires you to do well in your diploma of study?

Those posters of past award winners around the concourse inspires me to be one of them next time.

6. Last but not least, by being on the Director’s List this year, are you spurred on to be in the Director’s List again next year?

I can only say challenge accepted!

Not missing out on his very lengthy (Its a good sign, it proves that he really put a lot of thought & effort to answer me, which means you guys get to benefit from reading this, straight from a wiseman's heart & soul!), straight-from-the-heart & informative response to my questions:

How do you feel about doing well enough to be on the Director’s List?

I feel proud and ebullient (Note: One of the various definitions of this word is cheerful, which would be the appropriate meaning of the word in this sentence. See, people on the Director's List have very bombastic vocabulary!) for myself. My parents will definitely be proud of me and the lecturers will felt happy for me too.

Were you surprised at being in the Director’s List?

I would say yes. All of the MNS students are hardworking people. They all have potential to get into the Director’s List.

Was getting to be on the Director’s List one of your main goals after getting into your current diploma that you are partaking?

Actually no, my main goals are more to learning and to doing well in the process of studying.

If you know any freshmen that wants to be on the Director’s List, how would you advise them to get on the Director’s List?

First of all, you must set a target for yourself. Set your target high and not just a pass. Aim to improve, of course. Learning from past mistakes certainly helps. If you do not learn from it, how can you improve by doing the same mistakes over and over again?

Try not to skip any lectures although many modules are dry. Other courses have their dry modules too. Lectures are where all the small pieces of information come together to form a clearer picture of the modules.

Last but not least, believe in yourself because you know more than you think you do.

What inspires you to do well in your diploma of study?

I would like to share this story.

After many email & call attempts, I still can’t get into my course of choice, Mobile & Network Services due to my cut-off-point not being eligible for the course. I hate this cut-off-point system. Anyway what done has already been done. It does not matter now. In the end, I was posted to Mobile & Network Services after my final attempt that is through the DAE.

The moral of the story is, do not give up hope even though all hope seems lost. You never know when miracles will occur!

Of course, hard work is still the better way to go, but remember, never to give up any hope, for hope is there!

Last but not least, by being on the Director’s List this year, are you spurred on to be in the Director’s List again next year?

To be or not to be in the list is not important. What matters most to me will be what I get out from my course of study during the learning process. I will continue to work hard. 好！

IIT Director's List Ceremony

Hey y'all! It's Jaiden again! Today, I will be posting about the IIT Director's List Ceremony that concluded just a few hours ago, which some of the SIG members were helping out at. Now, what is the Director's List? Why is it such that its so special, a ceremony has to be created specfically for it? Let me explain.

The Director's List comprises of students that do well in their studies, specifically the top ten percent of each diploma's cohort. In short, if you have an excellent academic performance, you'll be presented with an award! Yay!

Alright, enough of talk, here's the pictures I took at the ceremony itself. Enjoy!

First off, two of our SIG main committee members are on the Director's List! Woohoo! That's our SIG president, Sam & one of our iPhone Assistant Heads, Yian Hock! The beautiful lady in the picture is our course coordinator, Ms. Ho Li Chin & the handsome man beside Sam is our course manager, Mr. Benny Chin. Also, Sam is not just on the Director's List, he is also a TP-Avaya scholar, which can only mean that he's really doing very well in his studies!

GC/OCP Trip to Hainan

Hey all! This is Jaiden, the new Assistant Secretary/Blogger of the MNS SIG! Oh, what’s SIG? It stands for Special Interest Group. It is a group that is exclusive to our diploma of Mobile & Network Services, I believe there may be other SIG’s for other courses, but our MNS SIG, as the name suggests, is a MNS-exclusive group. Okay, enough on that, we will have another blog post that specifically explains to everyone what is the SIG about & what do we do, though, in a nutshell, we organise &/or help out at school events.

Today, I’m here to post on the recent GC/OCP trip to Hainan, which some of us MNS students, along with students from all the other courses from IIT school went for. Basically, we all went to Hainan to interact with students from some schools over there, learn about the culture in Hainan, do community work, & for those of us taking the GC CDS (Global Citizenship Cross-Disciplinary Subject), we were there to learn about Global Citizenship, do some travel journals, take pictures & do research for our GC project!

Alright, before I go into any more explanations, I’ll treat you guys to some pictures first, after all, everyone loves pictures, don’t they?

Some of us feeling hyped up on the way to the classroom of the Hainanese students! TIME TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS! Anyway, just for your information, four of our SIG members are prominently featured in this picture. I’m the impeccably-dressed guy in the vest & holding the huge backpack (Which housed a 2.7kg MacBook, amongst other things. OUCH! But for work’s sake, it’s worth carrying that weight all over Hainan!), the lady with the beautiful smile in the red shirt beside me is my boss, a.k.a. the Head Secretary/Blogger of our SIG, Atiqah. The wise-looking boy behind me with the black glasses is Yian Hock, one of our Assistant iPhone Heads, while the cheery-looking handsome boy behind him is Hong Yi, our Event Head. The guy being obscured by my beautiful face & wind-swept messy hair is Andy, one of our Assistant Event Heads.

It seems as though our dear Event Head is very popular with the ladies in Hainan!

Our MNS SIG President, Sam is certainly very friendly with the students over there! Look at how wide the boy’s smile is!

Our Head Photographer, Wai Kit, sure knows how to steal the spotlight by striking a good pose in the foreground, even stealing the spotlight from five beautiful ladies behind him! This proves that a good photographer knows how to take good photos & look good in a photo!

See, I told you Wai Kit’s good at stealing the spotlight! Even the Hainanese students are enthralled by him!

I guess the students were really eagerly anticipating our arrival! Look at how excited they are!

Alright, there are so many more pictures I could’ve shown you guys, but then this post would be far too long!

Time for the ~~boring~~ *ahem* slightly wordy description of what this GC/OCP trip is about.. Aww.. Don’t worry, I’ll make it short & sweet, my summary skills are almost unrivalled in terms of quality & the amount of contraction whilst still retaining all the vital facts of an article!

Technically, going for this OCP/GC(Overseas Community Project/Global Citizenship) trip has two different experiences, one being optional. Let me start by explaining about OCP first, which is mandatory for people who want to go on the trip.

Concisely, if one goes for OCP, one basically has to do community work that usually only involves simple things like teaching the students over there basic hygiene, repairing a road in a village & interacting with the students over there. Also part of the package would be the fact that you get to learn about the culture of another country, know some people over there & as an added bonus, you get to have fun! Learning while having fun is like killing two birds with a stone, you enjoy yourself, & you bring home knowledge, experiences & lots of memories! Inspired to go for the next OCP yet?

So, what is the other experience? GC! Let me reiterate it, GC stands for Global Citizenship. It is a cross disciplinary subject(CDS) that one can take to earn their three of out nine required Credit Units(CUs), which is compulsory for every student in TP. To put it simply, it clears out one of three CDS’s which you must take! Of course, there is a pool of CDS’s which you can choose from, & GC is just one of them!

First off, before the trip itself, one has to attend four days of tutorials & lectures which educates students about what it means to be a global citizen, & prepares them for the trip in which they have to complete a few reflections & a project. The project has to be showcased in a presentation to their respective tutors once they are back, & it will be on a certain topic, a list would be given out during tutorials, so one has a variety of topics to do their project on.

Therefore, on top of all the fun one gets from OCP, one can also clear up a subject during their vacation time, effectively meaning one has one less subject to do during curriculum time, which may lead to Fridays free or a longer lunch break! Now, isn’t that an added perk? Of course, it is still a subject, so one must still do their best. That said, one must still try their best in everything, don’t you think so?

To sum up this post, I would like to say that having gone for the GC/OCP trip, I certainly feel rather fulfilled & I’ve learnt a lot of things from the trip. Also, I had lots of fun with my friends! There, learning while having fun! It’s almost poetic, isn’t it? Make going for the GC/OCP trip a consideration, it’s worth the while, trust me on this.

Temasek Polytechnic & IBM Collaborate to Set Up IT Service Management Centre

The centre is the first learning-cum-service centre in Asia. Situated in Temasek Polytechnic, the centre allows students of the Diploma in Mobile & Network Services to learn through the process of providing IT services to users. The centre adopts the globally-recognized IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL), provided by IBM.

Temasek Polytechnic is collaborating with IBM Singapore to set up an IT Service Management (ITSM) centre, enabling students to put into practice what they learn in the classroom by servicing the students and staff of the school.

This is Asia's very first learning-cum-service centre. The centre, located within Temasek Polytechnic, lets students of the Diploma in Mobile and Network Services learn through the process of providing IT services to users.

Course Manager Benny Chin says the centre focuses on meeting the needs of users - students will be facing real users with real issues, and get to experience real work situations.

The pioneer batch of students of the Diploma in Mobile & Network Services will graduate in March next year. In April this year, when the new academic year begins, these 60 students will get to put into practice the theory they have learnt in the classroom over the previous 2 years, helping their lecturers as well as fellow students resolve problems with their computers, networks, hardware and software.

23 year-old Kua Wee Seng feels that providing such services to his lecturers and fellow students will be a good learning experience as he will learn how to handle a variety of situations.

19 year-old Neilson Cheong is also looking forward to the centre starting operation. He says: "I have learnt much about network management in the classroom, and am eager to make use of the professional facilities and experience a real-world working environment."

The centre is adopting the globally recognized IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL), provided by IBM. The company will sponsor the 10 top-performing students to acquire professional certification. They will also have internship opportunities at IBM before they graduate.

General Manager of IBM, Mr Francis Fong says: "Through actual operations, students can learn how to handle users and prepare themselves for the working world. This is a win-win situation, because there is a lack of professionals who are equipped with technical and service skills, and also understand the market."

The Timetable app developed by Engeline and Shamil enables students and staff to access their timetables with ease, viewing their own timetable categorised by their student ID or lecturer ID.

2^nd Prize Winner – Jian Yu, Dip MWC Senior student

The CGPA app developed by Jian Yu enables students to track their performance each semester by calculating their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Students just need to key in the subject and grade by semester/term. The CGPA for that semester, as well as the overall accumulated CGPA, is then reflected.

MNS TPRawks iPhone & Wireless Workshop

On 26th of November, there was a workshop organised for some secondary school students to familiarise them with the mechanics of how our MNS course works, & of course, it was done in a really fun way! What’s fun nowadays? What’s really trendy? What’s really trendy & related to our course? The iPhone!

Basically, the workshop was centred around a lab session that taught the students how to make a simple iPhone application with the program ‘Xcode’, & the students were able to create their own application within forty-five minutes.

Overall, the whole workshop itself was very informative & engaging for the students as evident from their happy smiles & their relatively high energy level. You could also see that they were very attentive the whole time, which just goes to show that the students were rather interested in our course. Will they be potential freshies? We’ll see in a few months time.

This Event Was Held On 4th and 5th of October 2010 and a group of about 50 Japanese students and 40 of our very own IIT students participated in it. Both the Mobile & Network Services (MNS) and Financial Business Informatics (FBI) students joined forces and helped organised the rather successful event which ran for 2 days. Hello all! This blog has been a little dusty hasn't it?

Firstly, our sincere apologies :)

So as the title above explained, i'm here to blog on the long overdue updates of the FRESHMEN DAY that was organized by the MNS SIG members on May 6 for the 2010/2011 MNS freshies! And FYI, the FRESHMEN DAY is organized every year to facilitate closer bondings between course mates and also lecturers and tutors. Last year's event was a BBQ held right here in school but this year's FRESHMEN DAY was tweaked a little. A little different I should say.

There were games prepared such as 'Who are you?' (ice breaker), 'Let's Whack!' and 'Pocky-mon'. Sounds.. interesting right? And to reward the freshies for paticipating, each of them were given a box of KFC's Finger Lickin' Good Snackers! Okay, I shouldn't bore anyone now by listing down all the events that took place, so i'll let the pictures do the talking ^_^

Director's List Award Ceremony

Admission to the Director’s List is an honour reserved only for the top 10% of each Diploma’s cohort. On Friday, 30 April, students together with their parents gathered in Auditorium 1 to witness this special ceremony in which students were presented awards for their excellent academic performance in the past year.

This group of awesome MNS students and lecturers had went to Cambodia on 30 March 2010, in the morning. It is a 7 days tour. There are 36 of Year 1 students who went there for Global Citizenship and 10 of Year 2 with students and 1 Year 1 student who went there for Overseas Community Project. They are just back yesterday safely on 6 April 2010, in the afternoon.

You shall update the incident ticketing system and coordinate with the helpdesk team or other support group to close the incident.

A Diploma in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering,Science, Engineering or its equivalent. Those with at least 2 years of working experience will be considered for senior roles.
IT savvy and proficient in Internet and Email applications (such as Lotus Notes clientand MS Outlook).
Strong interest in IT and Customer Service.
Customer oriented, patient and a strong team player.
Possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
Willing to perform 12-hour Shift Work.

Systems Operators (AS/400, Windows or Unix) (10 Positions)

Main Job Duties:
You will perform the day-to-day data centre/computer operations (such as running the batch programs, printing of reports, systems and data backup, tapes/cartridges preparation and storage, etc).
You will be required to pro-actively monitor the data centre systems’ uptime and performance (such as Server, Midrange and/or Mainframe systems, Networking equipment, Telecommunication connections, Email and Security Systems, Data Centre environment, etc) to prevent any down time or low performance.
You will diagnose and log down hardware problems into incident ticketing system, coordinate the problem resolution with the respective vendor or second level support personnel.
You will liaise with the vendors and other technical teams on any data centre related maintenance and installation activities.
You will also assist to provide helpdesk and basic IT troubleshooting support.
You will also assist in other IT related projects implementations.
Job Requirements:

Experience in operating Windows Server, UNIX and/or AS/400 systems.
Minimum 6 months data centre experience will be beneficial.
Good in work prioritization and able to maintain the service levels.
A detailed and systematic person, following the data centre operating procedures.
Must be able to perform Shift Work (Mandatory).

Mobile applications had become popular as the number of users using iPhone had increased. Nowadays, iPhone can be seen almost everywhere and those users who owns an
iPhone are not only adults even students too. Most people who owns an iPhone does not use it just for communications purpose, but for the different kinds of useful and fun mobile applications.

Have you ever wonder who created those mobile applications? ((:

Recently there are news reporting on mobile applications and it has been clearly shown that most of the mobile applications was created by students. A good example will be the mobile application which was created by an university graduate, Zhou Wenhan. He created a mobile application named Location-based application. He was inspired to do so after taking a module on how to create an iPhone application. This application is useful not only to locals but to tourists too. It helps to find the way through in big shopping malls such as Vivo City in Singapore. This application can simply locate the shops they are looking for and finding the shortest route for them to reach there. The best thing is this applications is FREE of charge.

However, not all mobile applications are free. A good examples will be the application named Taxi lah! and StationAlarm. This two applications are created by Sahil Lavingia and Mugunth Kumar. They doing this as a part-time business venture. Although this two applications needed to be pay in order to use, however it does not stop the users from buying. From the news reporting, it has shown that there are many people who are willing to pay for the applications even up to now. Thus, this shows that money is not a problem as long as the application is user-friendly and effective.

Therefore, for sure there will be many job opportunities in this industries as years goes by. ((:

TP OPEN HOUSE ' 2010

On 7-9 January 2010, we are involved in helping out at the event of TP OPEN HOUSE where we have showcase projects done by lecturers and students and at the same time explaining this NEW and awesome course to secondary school students and as well as students that are planning to join temasek polytechnic.

We have showcase projects such as...

#1 - 2D Bar Code M-business

In this project of 2D Bar code M-business, we had demostrated how you can develop a mobile application to decode a 2D Bar code. This project make use of 2D bar code that could store contact information and can be easily read by using any camera phone. With that it makes exchange of information simpler and easier.

#2 - Mobile Wireless Control

In this project of Mobile Wireless Control, we had demonstrated how we can develop a mobile solution to communicate with a PC through a Blue tooth wireless network. This project attempts to use the built-in capabilities of a readily-available mobile phone like the HTC Touch Diamond to apply motion control to PCs.

Mobile & Network Services (MNS) Diploma has two options:

Mobile Solutions Option
IT Service Management (ITSM) Option

Mobile Solutions Option:

Temasek Polytechnic is the only Polytechnic in Singapore that offers this course to students. Students learn how to create applications or games on their mobile devices (such as handphones, iPhones, PDAs etc) for personal and commercial usage (such as entertainment, businesses, education).

IT Service management (ITSM) Option:

There will be a ‘Live’ ITSM centre in Temasek Polytechnic, Informatics & IT (IIT) School in 2011. Students will acquire the necessary knowledge on ITSM during lessons and will be working in this ITSM centre to experience and apply their learnt skills. Mobile & Network Services in Informatics & IT (IIT) School is the first Diploma in Asia that will have a ITSM centre of its own and uses it to train its own students on real ‘Live’ working conditions.

iPhone and LAN Workshop

On 24 Novemeber 2009, MNS had organised an iPhone and LAN workshop for students who had completed their O levels or wanting to join the tertiary industry.

The iPhone workshop is to teach the students to create an iPhone game application. As for the LAN workshopp is to teach the students to create a LAN connection that enables them to play games with their friends at home.

The workshops was a great SUCCESS, due to the great response from the students.

On 16 to 18 November 2009, TP rawks was being held. It is an annual event where Temasek Polytechnic had organised for students who had completed their O levels or wanting to join the tertiary industry. Through this event, they will have a taste of what it means to be part of the most vibrant polytechnic around.

There were series of workshops and games at different academic schools, Applied Science (AS), Business (BUS), Design (DES), Engineering (ENG) and Informatics & IT (IIT) and Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS).

MNS had done their part in promoting the course through workshops, games and also not forgetting our cute mascot. ((:

The event was started off by...

A group photo taking where eventually it was being printed out in a name card form with the 2D Barcode on it.
The 2D Barcode will form our MNS's blog URL.

After which, the event was followed by...

A short introduction about our course by our course manager, Mr Benny Chin.
A introduction about OPEN FIRE and SPARKS by our former students.
(OPEN FIRE is to help set up the server, and while SPARKS is a software to connect the server and through the software the students will be able to chat with one another.)

A mini quiz session was being held, with attractive prizes.

National Infocomm Club Awards Ceremony

On 11 November 2009, 3 diploma courses from TP IIT School had went for the National Infocomm Club Awards Ceremony which was being held at Downtown East. The 3 diploma courses each have showcase product/service which was being developed by their own diploma respectively.

For MNS, we have showcase "SMS Feedback System" which was being developed by Students and Lecturers from MNS. This system helps to get feedback from the public by just one sms. Through this system, we could able to collate the feedback faster and more efficient.

Juniors from MNS, Jianyu, Huifen and Vanda and lecturer, Mr. Simon have went to the booth to help promote the service to the primary, secondary and junior college students and at the same time promoting MNS to the secondary students.

There are also booth from different primary, secondary and junior college school where they had took part in the competition. We could see that the students had really put in alot of efforts in promoting their product/service to the public so as to get more voting for their own team. ((: IMPRESSIVE!

Campus Relay

On 30 of october 2009, there was a Campus Relay held at TP. It was a relay which consists of 8 person per group and roughly there are up to 40 groups. We are proud that out of 40 groups, 1 group are from MNS and there's another group under IIT school. This event not only consists of the students, but also the lecturers too. Even our course manager, Dr Eng also ran with the students. ((:

The route for this relay was 1.2km where it started from the Koi Pond area, followed by out to Bedok Reservoir and back to the Koi Pond area. It was a long route, but the runners did not give up half way. Instead they tried their very best and run till the finishing line.

Although MNS did not managed to win in this relay, but we are sure they had tried their best and thus, EVERYONE IS A WINNER!

Freshman Night

On 29 October 2009, it’s Freshman Night. The whole event started around 5.30pm, when the freshmen of MNS started rolling in into LT4. After everyone has arrived, we started by moving them to the concourse and there is where all the fun began.

The games we played are KUSU Island and The Longest Line. The objective of the game KUSU Island is to squeeze everyone into one groundsheet with both feet in and the objective of the game The Longest Line is to form a longest line using anything you can find on your body. The usual thing you can find will be shoes, socks, wallet and cards.

After the games, all of us went back to LT4 to take a break and while waiting for the BBQ to be ready. While waiting, we played a simple game using the volleyball. They are to pass the ball around, when the music which was being played stop the person who took the ball will be down for forfeit. There’s four of them who are down for forfeit and their forfeit was to dance CHICKEN DANCE. As most of them are shy, thus we have the SIG team to dance along with them.

Finally, BBQ is ready. Thus everyone headed to the BBQ pit and have fun eating, chatting and taking photographs. After which, there’s a short prize presentation for those team who had won in the games and we had Dr Eng to give out the presents.

Secondary School Visit

On 28 October 2009, we are happy to have a group of secondary school students who came to visit at Temasek Polytechnic, IIT school. They are here not only to visit the school, but also to get to know more about Mobile & Network Services.

We are pleased to have Mr Martin, a lecturer and also year 1 coordinator, to present a presentation about Mobile & Network Services. Through this presentation, it helps to make the secondary students to have a better and clearer view and idea of Mobile & Network Services.

On 19 to 23 October, there is a POL-ITE WATERPOLO GAMES @ Temasek Polytechnic, Swimming Complex. This game was played among 5 different polytechnic. Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic and of course, Temasek Polytechnic. It was a tough fight among this 5 different polytechnic.

Orientation for October Intake

15 to 16 October 2009 was the orientation for the October Intake students who are either taking the course of Mobile and Wireless Computing or Information Technology. There are roughly 27 new intakes this round. 15 of them are from Mobile and Wireless Computing.
This new batch of intakes is mostly in different race, religion and even regional. However, they still managed to communicate, help and make friends with each other. We are happy to be able to see them bond together within this 2 days of orientation.

We hope YOU will be able to survive through these 3 years of poly and have fun with this new group of classmates you have. ENJOY IT!

Japanese Exchange

6 October 2009, a group of students from the Kumamoto National College of Technology (KNCT) came to pay a visit to Temasek Polytechnic Information and Informatics Technology (IIT) School for a cultural exchange. There are roughly 50 students and teachers who were present in this event. This event was being host by the Financial Business Informatics (FBI) Student Interest Group and as well as us, the Mobile & Wireless Computing (MWC) Student Interest Group (SIG).

The event was started off with a short welcome speech by our course manager, Dr Eng Pin Kwang, followed by a welcome speech by the Professor of KNCT.

After which, Cindy from FBI SIG gave a short presentation about the courses in TP’s IIT school and Andrew from MWC SIG did a presentation about his life being a poly student. A video was being shown to the KNCT student to give them a better idea of life being a poly student. This video was done by Jianyu. After the presentation, it was time for the KNCT students to share about their culture and life as a student in their collage. They did a demonstrations on tea brewing and showing us a few moves on kendo.

When all presentations were over, a campus tour was conducted for the KNCT students. Places visited are Library, Engine Aeroplane, Business Object Lab, Reuters Lab and IIT Learning Space. There were demonstration and guides at various stations by the SIG students. This is to help the KNCT students to have a better idea of the use of the area and giving them a brief idea of what FBI/MWC is focusing on. In between, there are short games being played where it helps to build the bonding of KNCT students with TP students. The campus tour was ended at the fountain being TP and that is where we had our photo taking session.

Interactions between TP and KNCT students

Eventually, good things have to come to an end. Thus, the event had ended around 5pm and in order to leave a good memories for the KNCT students, we had a gift exchange session. After which, there is a light refreshment for them before they head back to their hotel.

In overall, we believe that both visitors and as well as the students and lecturers from TP had enjoyed themselves in this event. We would also like to THANKS the lecturers, FBI SIG and as well as MWC SIG. Without you, this will not be a successful event.

What is the Diploma in Mobile & Network Services (MNS)?

What are the technologies that enable you to make free phone calls over the Internet? Or how mobile phone games are created? Come join us and immerse yourself in some of the most exciting technologies and use them to connect people and to enrich their lives!

What's the course about?
In the Diploma in Mobile & Network Services, students first gain a strong grounding in IT fundamentals as well as computer network technologies. Following this, students will have choose one of the following diploma options to focus on:

The Mobile Solutions option, focusing on mobile technologies and developing software and services for mobile devices
The IT Service Management option, focusing on managing networks and improving IT operations and services

What can I do after the course?
Armed with the Diploma in MNS, you can take up jobs in the area of infrastructure support in multinational companies. The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) found in 2008 that infrastructure support is one of the top 2 in-demand categories of infocomm-related jobs. With organizations becoming ever more dependent on IT, the need for professionals who can manage the delivery of IT services is assured.

Students from this diploma can also learn about creating mobile software and services, and be a part of this exciting new area of software development. In the Sep 23 2009 issue of Digital Life (DL) which highlighted local software developers receiving the inaugural DL Successful Developers Awards, a whopping 7 out of the 26 featured developers were involved in creating mobile software for devices such as iPhones!

Many of you may also want to consider further studies after obtaining a diploma - with MNS, you can enjoy subject exemptions at local universities (NUS, NTU and SMU) as well as overseas universities in Australia (e.g. Australian National University, Monash University, University of Queensland) and the United Kingdom (e.g. University of Manchester, Coventry University, University of Glamorgan).

What else can the course offer?
The Diploma in MNS has established working relationships with leading industry partners such as Avaya and IBM, enabling us to offer realistic learning experiences that better prepare students for life in the working world.
